Problem to install QNX4 on a INTEL D2500HN
Hello,

I'm trying to install QNX 4 on a mainboard Intel D2500HN.

When the installation application is launched, vertical black lines of around 1 cm wide every 4 cm appear on the screen.

If I ignore this display problem and continue the installation, when the installation application scans the devices, the
 application freezes completely.

I had the same phenomenom with the mainboard JetWay NC9KDL-2700

Any known problems with theses mainboards?

Many thanks
Michele
Re: Problem to install QNX4 on a INTEL D2500HN
Hi Michele,

We haven't tested Intel D2500HN or JetWay NC9KDL-2700 boards.

But there is a known issue with the PCI BIOS implementation on some
boards which can cause installation program to freeze on hardware detect.
For more details:
http://community.qnx.com/sf/wiki/do/viewPage/projects.qnx4/wiki/InstallationNotesForProc32

Try to launch Fsys and Fsys.atapi manually from the shell (you can start
shell from the QNX launch menu of the installer).
If Fsys.atapi crashes by SIGSEGV then you've faced this problem and
unfortunately in this case you can't use Product Suite CD for installation.

As for display problem I only can recommend to try different launch menu
options (e.g. try Emulate Video BIOS option).

Pavel

Dear Pavel,

Thanks for the answer.

What is the alternative way for QNX installation than the Product suite CD
??

Re: Problem to install QNX4 on a INTEL D2500HN
The simplest way is to connect hard driver to another PC and:
- install QNX to HD from the Product Suite CD;
- load newly installed QNX and update Proc32 module;
- rebuild boot image with new Proc32 and option -E0;
- replace .boot or .altboot with new image;

Then you can connect HD back and load QNX. Also you have to modify
sysinit to load proper drivers.

Re: Problem to install QNX4 on a INTEL D2500HN
Dear Pavel,

I could install QNX on the JetWay NC9KDL-2700 board that way.

However, with the Intel D2500HN, this is not working.

When I restart the new installed board, the system freezes after : "Press
ESC for alternate OS.."

Did you ever experience that?
What can I do?

Many thanks
Regards
Michele

Re: Problem to install QNX4 on a INTEL D2500HN
Hi Michele,

It looks like bootloader can't detect partition with QNX because it was
created on another PC which detected different disk geometry.
In this case you have to use alternative boot method (boot from
USB-flash, from CD or net-boot) to boot QNX4 on your Intel D2500HN board.
The easiest way is to create a bootable USB-flash. Product Suite CD 2011
Installer allows to install QNX to the USB flash.
http://www.qnx.com/developers/articles/rel_4658_1.html#USB_installation

Then, load form USB-flash and rebuild boot image for your USB-flash with
new Proc32 and option -E0. You can find build file on the USB-flash in
boot/build directory.

After that you can try to load your D2500HN board form the USB-flash
and manually copy all required components of the QNX4 OS to the HDD, for
that:
 - run driver for the IDE controller (e.g. Fsys.atapi);
 - create partitions for your HDD and write bootloader (by fdisk utility);
 - create QNX file system (by dinit);
 - mount QNX partition and manually copy all required files (you can
copy form your USB-flash);
 - at the end you have to modify sysinit and prepare .boot to load form
HDD (don't forget about new Proc32 and -E0 option);

Re: Problem to install QNX4 on a INTEL D2500HN
Dear Pavel,

I tried this way, however, when I launch QNX on the intel mother board with
the USB stick, here is the message I get :

/bin/io-usb-ehci terminated (SIGSEGV) at 00D1:000095F2

Is there still another way to install QNX?

Thanks

Michele

Hi Pavel,

I have double-checked. I use the last version of Proc32, with -E0 option.
But I still have this message about io-usb-ehci that terminates.

Dear Pavel,

With your new .boot, I could boot from the USB stick now. I do everything
you said (fdisk, dinit,..)

However, the result is the same : when booting, the system blocks after

When you press esc, the boot loader would look to boot from the alternate qnx boot img located in the .altboot file. If
there isn't one it would then hang. Does that file exist with a valid image?

correctly with jetway motherboard)

Hi Michele,

Try to clean hard drive MBR (note, this will remove partition table and
bootloader):
# i=0; while [ $i -lt 512 ]; do echo -ne '\0' >> /zero.dat; let i=$i+1; done
# dd if=/zero.dat of=/dev/hd0.0 bs=512 count=1
and perform installation again (fdisk, dinit,...):
...

Don't forget to mark QNX partition as bootable and write bootloader, e.g.
# fdisk /dev/hd0.0 boot -s1
# fdisk /dev/hd0.0 loader

Hi Michele,

I forgot to mention that it is necessary to restart Fsys.atapi driver or
reboot system after cleaning MBR record.
So the action sequence should be:
# i=0; while [ $i -lt 512 ]; do echo -ne '\0' >> /zero.dat; let i=$i+1; done
# dd if=/zero.dat of=/dev/hd0.0 bs=512 count=1

Re: Problem to install QNX4 on a INTEL D2500HN
Dear Pavel,

Thank you for your support, I will check that.

From my side, I have some news with that problem.

The original configuration I tried to use is installing QNX on a SATA flash
(a Transcend SATA SSD). So this configuration works with the Jetway, but not
with the INTEL D2500HN.

I tried another configuration, replacing the SATA flash by a SATA hard
drive. I install the hard drive from another mainboard, then change Proc32,
and change .boot with -E0 option. I put the hard drive back on the Intel
mainboard. This is working!!

So, it seems the problem comes from the flash.
Is there maybe another driver I can use to be able to make work it with the
flash?

Many thanks
Regards
Michele

Dear Pavel,

How can I get the correct values of heads/sectors? May I use the one I read
in fdisk?

Thanks

Re: Problem to install QNX4 on a INTEL D2500HN
Hi Michele,

The fdisk utility gets this information from the Fsys driver and I
suppose that this heads/sectors values are wrong.

The ideal way is to get these values from BIOS. Most BIOSes show
connected drives geometry.

Also before you start/restart the Fsys.atapi driver with new
heads/sectors values ensure that partition table is empty (e.g. fdisk -z
/dev/hd0.0) otherwise new values will have no effect.

Pavel

Re: Problem to install QNX4 on a INTEL D2500HN
Dear Pavel,

I think this can come from heads/sectors bad values. Indeed, after trying to
do what you said, the system does not work anymore even on a old mainboard
now, and it freezes at the same place!

I could not find the correct value of CHS from BIOS, but I could find them
from the flash datasheet.

However, I can not complete the installation following your advice. Here
what I do :

1. dd if=/zero.dat of=/dev/hd0.0 bs=512 count=1
2. Stop Fsys.atapi
3. Start Fsys.atapi with correct head/sector value.

Then I get the message : "can't attach to Fsys (Resource busy)". And then,
when I launch fdisk /dev/hd0.0, the system freezes.

What do I wrong?

Many thanks for your help.
Regards
Michele

Hi Michele,

It seems that you forgot to remove prefixes in /dev that Fsys.atapi creates.
Try the following stop sequence:
# umount /dev/hd0.0
# rm /dev/hd0.0 /dev/cd0.0
# sin // to ensure that driver is terminated.

Regards,
Pavel

Re: Problem to install QNX4 on a INTEL D2500HN
Dear Pavel,

Yes, you were right. I've figured out that this morning and I've installed
everything again. It is working again with old mainboard.

But again, with the INTEL D2500HN, same behaviour : freezing...

Regards
Michele

Hi Michele,

It seems that you forgot to remove prefixes in /dev that Fsys.atapi creates.
Try the following stop sequence:
# umount /dev/hd0.0
# rm /dev/hd0.0 /dev/cd0.0
# sin // to ensure that driver is terminated.

Re: Problem to install QNX4 on a INTEL D2500HN
Hi Michele,

Several additional ideas:
1. Try to boot QNX from a small partition in first 1024 cylinders of the SSD
2. Try different secondary bootloaders. Look at dinit options -b -O -4 -8.
3.Try SSD in AHCI mode. Switch BIOS SATA configuration to AHCI. In this
case you have to use experimental Fsys.ahci driver. Fsys.ahci is
available by the following link:
http://community.qnx.com/sf/wiki/do/viewPage/projects.qnx4/wiki/LatestSoftwareUpdates
4. Continue experiments with CHS values.

If these won't help then I can only recommend to try another SSD or use
a hard drive.

Regards,
Pavel
