QNX 4.23a install problems
Hello,

We have a QNX 4.23a system that had the hard drive fail recently and we're having problems reinstalling the OS on a new
drive.

I insert the beet disk
QNX splash screen comes up
run Fsys.eide
drive is recognized
I've tried using fdisk and creating a QNX partition as well as just using the install program to try and set it up and
every time I get the error - /dev/hd0 failed to initialize.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Re: QNX 4.23a install problems
Are you running Fsys before you start Fsys.eide?

Thanks,

Re: QNX 4.23a install problems
System can't fin the file. Just to be clear is insert the 4.23a boot disk, at the prompt run Fsys?

Re: QNX 4.23a install problems
Maybe it has already been started by the installer. See if you can run
'sin' and see if Fsys is running. BTW, what is the size of the drive that
you are installing?

Re: QNX 4.23a install problems
Unfortunately "sin" doesn't work either. No such file or directory.

The drive the system originally was running on was a 20GB Maxtor. If replaced it with a very similar Maxtor but 16GB.
I've also tried brand new (much larger) drives with no success.
Re: QNX 4.23a install problems
Fsys is started by the boot process, so you don't need to start that. I
have looked at the Fsys, Fsys.eide and fdisk source and don't see the
failed initialization message in any of them. I presume the the disk that
you are using is good?

Re: QNX 4.23a install problems
I believe so, it works in other systems. I have tried other disks as well. Is there a way to manually install QNX
without using the "install" command at the prompt?
Re: QNX 4.23a install problems
I'm not aware of any other way to install the O/S, other than the install
program. Have you tried another disk driver other than Fsys.eide? You
could try the Fsys.ide driver and see if that makes any difference.
Unfortunately I don't have any "old" machines here to try the 4.23
install. I have no idea where the "/dev/hd0 failed to initialize" message
is coming from. Is this the exact message?

RE: QNX 4.23a install problems
Hi Mark,

You have to understand that you are dealing with a very old version of our OS, it supports limited hardware and the
number of people we have, here at QNX, that remember anything about this version is even more limited.

A couple of things that might be worth looking at:
- has your BIOS been setup correctly for this new drive? For some reason I think it needs to be, but I could be wrong :
-)
- you should be able to boot from the boot floppy, then issues any commands that the install program does manually, if
you know the exact commands and where everything is... I think all commands would need to be prefixed with /bin i.e. /
bin/Fsys you should root around on the boot floppy and see what you find, and where, then start experimenting.
Or.. if you have another machine that is running the same version of QNX, you could try hooking this new drive up to
that machine, until you figure out how to get it working. Then use that knowledge when doing the actual install.

I hope this helps a little.

-Martin.

Re: QNX 4.23a install problems
Are you using a 'recovery' disk or the 'install' disk? Where are you planning to reinstall from a stack of floppies? or
 from another drive?

You can install without using 'install' command by just copying files from one drive to another.

Still trying to remember where I've seen the drive failed to initialize message before.

Re: QNX 4.23a install problems
I've got the drive setup in the BIOS.

I can boot to the "Boot Floppy" just fine. I can't however search around. It seems a lot of core Unix commands are
missing from the disk. ls for example doesn't work.

No other machines run this version of QNX.

I am using the Install disks, all floppies. I'll try setting up the drive and copying the files from the disks over.

Thank you everyone for you help and suggestions. This is quite frustrating.
RE: QNX 4.23a install problems
Yep, there was only room on the floppy for so much, 'ls' wasn't required to install.
What other versions of QNX do you have running on other machines?

Re: RE: QNX 4.23a install problems
I'm certain my install disks are toast. I dug up some 4.22 disks and it installed without problem. Is there a way to
get a copy of 4.23a?
RE: RE: QNX 4.23a install problems
The install disks (3 or 4 archive disks)? Or the boot disk?
If it's just the boot disk (that contains the disk drivers and install program etc.), you could try with the QNX 4.22
boot disk, and the 4.23a install (archive) disks. If this works (and I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't) you
will end up with a 4.23a install, nothing from the boot disk gets installed to the system (except the license).

I just check in a dark corner of productions, blew the dust off some big tupperware bins and searched through the
remaining stock of old QNX 4 products that were sold on floppy disk... there were no QNX 4.23a disks there. I'm sure we
could find some somewhere and a way to copy them if absolutely necessary.

-Martin.

Re: RE: RE: QNX 4.23a install problems
Is all the files from QUICS still around? There use to be tar.Z files containing the different versions of QNX, Photon,
etc. It took a valid license in your profile to get to them. I started with 4.24 so I wouldn't have any 4.23 stuff in
 my tupperware bins.
Re: RE: RE: QNX 4.23a install problems
I THINK just the boot disk. I did try with the 4.22 boot disk and when it prompted for a disk i threw in the 4.23a disk
and it gave me a license error.
RE: RE: RE: QNX 4.23a install problems
I'm not following....

The process is:
- boot disk
	- detect drives and start drivers
	- start install program
	- start install program
- install disk1
- install disk2, 3...
- boot disk (to read license)

If it's failing on the last step - reading the license - this is possibly correct (we might have changed the license
format) but don't worry it should boot regardless.
You can then use the license utility to read the license from the 4.23a boot floppy after booted.

If it's not failing at the last step, please explain where/when it's failing.
Note: It could be my memory that is failing, this is ~15 year old stuff...

-Martin.

Re: RE: RE: RE: QNX 4.23a install problems
I tried that process earlier and it failed right when I inserted Disk 1.

But I was able to install 4.23a over top of 4.22 using the install -u which skips the disk setup process of the install.

I should be alright now.

Thank you everyone for your help.
