Pg.i830, device 2a12, sometimes black screen
Board : ADLINK cPCI-3965
Chipset GME965GMCH with integrated GMA X3100 for graphics
Device ID of graphic devices 2a12 and 2a13.

I use Pg.i830 and crttrap of release rel1736 and rel1737
I managed to start photon in the way you described in topic topc9631 by adding the device to crttrap.list. With ID 2a12
I can set resolutions up to 1600x1200.

Now the problems :

1)
I see the same effect as reported in topc9749 :
"When I shutdown GUI and start it again then screen becomes covered by small black lines."
The screen looks the same as on the picture he attached.
Not very important for me, because our application will start photon just one time.

2)
With a 50 percent chance the screen gets black and stays black when I start photon.
I can get back to the text screen when I type blind the keyboard shortcuts to shutdown photon (windows-key then h then
s). So I think photon is running and the graphics driver does not display the photon screen.
Is there a chance to fix this ?

Thanks in advance and best regards.

Hello!

Pg.i830 driver doesn't support 2a12 and 2a13 devices at this moment. In
any case there is no chance to fix this without hardware.

Re: Pg.i830, device 2a12, sometimes black screen
Hi Oleg,

I hope you didn't get me wrong. Device 2a12 works fine when it starts correct. But one of two times the screen stays
black.
So probably it is just a little problem in the initialization of the graphic chip. Maybe a little wait time at the right
 posittion would help ...
I spent a lot of time to get my old application runnig on this board. The last big problem now is, that the graphic mode
 does not start reliable.

I found out, that I can access the machine via phditto from another machine, even when the screen stays black. Is there
anything I can check for you to find the reason of the problem (show_pci, sin ...) ?
Or do you have some kind of tool that shows the status of the graphic chip that might help you to fix this ?

With best regards !

Hello!

Driver Pg.i830 doesn't support your device correctly. I have to discuss
this issue with others. I think we can improve the driver in the future
releases.

Re: Pg.i830, device 2a12, sometimes black screen
Hi Oleg,

can you give me a rough idea about the date of a "future release" ?
Is it a matter of days or of month ?

I could ask Adlink if they can lend you this type of board.
I don't know if if they are interested in this, but if you tell me that this will speed up the improvement of the driver
, I would ask them.

I looked at the data-sheets of some other cPCI boards. It seems that they all use this INTEL chipsets with this
integrated graphic functions. The older boards use ICH7/945 types, the newer boards that support faster CPUs use the
ICH8/965 types. I think to be up to date with actual boards it is important to support this chips in all variants. At
the moment I can not tell by a look into the data-sheet of a board if it will work with Pg.i830 or not.

There are a lot of viewers of this post. It seems that other people have similar problems.

To all the viwers of this post :

If you have similar problems with a board - please make a comment with your results. Maybe this helps the people here to
 improve the driver.

If you have cPCI boards with support of core 2 duo 1,5GHz or higher that work fine with QNX4/photon (graphic, network...
), then please give me a message about manufacturer and board-type.

Maybe in this way we get a supported/not supported list of boards. So not everybody has to test all boards to find one
that works with QNX4/photon.

With my best regards,
Werner

Re: Pg.i830, device 2a12, sometimes black screen
Hi Werner,

Thanks for all the effort that you are putting into this!

We're obviously interested in supporting as many of the latest devices as possible, unfortunatly we'll never be able to
support them all at once.

With this project we're getting close to our release date and as Oleg has pointed out, this device isn't currently
supported.

Your question now is:
"Can we add support and when?"

To best answer this I need to explain our plans, going forward, for supportig new harwdare under QNX 4.

Our plan is, on an on-going basis, to backport QNX 6 drovers to QNX 4 - wherever possible. Given architectural
differences it isn't always possible, but in the case of graphics driver we have a migration path and things are pretty
good.

The plan is to release a new CD for QNX 4 annually - the progression of drivers will be:
- support on QNX 6
- port to qnx 4
- post ported driver as experimental
- add to new CD and release

As you can see this means that QNX 4 support will always lag behind QNX 6.

If you can - could you tell us if this board/device works with QNX 6? And using which driver?

This might help answer the "when" - for QNX 4.

-Martin.

Re: Pg.i830, device 2a12, sometimes black screen
Hi Martin,

thank you for your explanations. It's good to know how the developing process works.

A colleague tried to get QNX6 running on this board. Graphik also did not work.
From Michael Van Reenen he got the answer :
"We plan to add support for this device in our 6.4.2 release later this fall."

In the case they manage to do this - how many weeks is the lag to QNX4 usually ?

Best regards,
Werner

Hi Werner,

There is no "usually" as it's a new process! I expect it to be a month or two, but maybe we'll be quicker!

-Martin.
