Forum Topic - Install QNX OS and runtime files without Momentics?: (6 Items)

Install QNX OS and runtime files without Momentics?
I have a new CPU with a 1GB solid state drive, and the 6.3.2 installer won't run with less than 2GB. I don't want all of
Momentics on this target, just the OS and runtime files, which I'm sure use less than 1GB. How can I install just the
OS and runtime files?
Re: Install QNX OS and runtime files without Momentics?
Hi Jeffrey,

Unfortunately the installation is all or nothing. It's a full
development seat so really does need > 1GB.

In 6.3.2 we had a Runtime Kit product available for purchase if that is
something you would like to think about.

If not the only alternative is to install by hand.

When you say "a new CPU with a 1GB solid state drive" is the drive
removable?

If it USB then another option is to install to another machine then
initialize the USB drive and manually copy files to it. This follows the
procedure for embedding Neutrino on a PC. I can give you the details if
you chose this route.

If the drive is handled by some other interface then I would have to see
if there is anything which could be done.

Thanks,
Keith Russell

Re: Install QNX OS and runtime files without Momentics?
Thanks for the reply.

My current setup is creaky: I have an ancient QNX-hosted PC and my target is a PC-104 486 board from RTD Systems, with a
32-MB solid state disk. I made a boot floppy that I attach to my target, and init and format the SSD. When it's up
enough to run qnet, I then run a script that copies my needed runtime files from /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, and so on.

I'm migrating to a more modern system: A late model Windows-hosted Momentics platform for development, and a PC-104 AMD
Geode with 1 GB of soldered-in solid state disk. I was hoping to ditch my floppies and scripts, and boot up from an
official QNX disk and install the RTOS without all the development materials. Would the runtime kit do what I want?

I suppose I could boot up from my momentics CD, and do the init, format, and copy from the CD instead of over qnet.
That would at least move me in the direction of a more standard target initialization.

The runtime kit would allow you to install just the portions of the
runtime you require. I am not sure of costs, though.

Since you are already familiar with the entire 'copy by hand' then yes,
running from CD is likely the simplest solution.

Oh yes, you said "This follows the
procedure for embedding Neutrino on a PC. I can give you the details if
you chose this route."

I would like to see the procedure for embedding Neutrino, if you can provide it to me or point me to the right place on
the web site.

Actually you appear to have already been doing it based on an earlier
post. I was really talking about initializing the drive, etc. The
"Building Embedded Systems" book gives all of the details on embedding
in general but for this instance it really is more of a "dinit and copy"
approach.
